Casey + Joey Nelms
Casey + Joey met ten years ago in their high school marching band. Casey thought Joey was super cute, so when Casey’s friend was dating his friend, she found the opportunity to get his phone number. Joey says she appeared from no where and within a few weeks he had fallen and is still falling in love with her. Casey remembers this moment thinking, “’I can’t imagine that I will ever break up with him. He is my favorite person to be with’ And that’s when I knew that I was probably going to marry him which was pretty crazy considering that we were both still in high school.”
What is something you love about Casey?
Joey: “I love that she grows things. She nurtures plants and cares for all kinds of people (she’s a social worker). She even pays close attention to the emotional wellbeing of our beloved mutt. There’s a gentle slant in her eyes that I’ve always loved as well. Hard to choose.”
What is one of your favorite memories together?
Casey: Roaming the streets of Paris is definitely one of my most favorite memories I have with Joey. We both travel the same way. That is, we air on the side of spontaneity. We are minimal planners. We were there on our honeymoon, and we had a truly wonderful time. We walked down a winding street in the rain, and I remember that day that we ate sushi. We actually bought our wedding rings in Paris, not before the wedding, and we exchanged them next to the Eiffel Tower. I remember one time when we at the most northern peek in Paris, is was so windy that Joey’s beanie was blown off. We stayed out so late one night and did not know that the Subway shuts down at midnight so we had to walk all the way back to our hotel. We didn’t get until maybe 3 in the morning.
Joey: Our first “vacation” together. We were still in high school. We were on a band trip to Disney world and were supposed to stay in groups of three or more with a chaperone. All the other kids stuck to the rules and rode all the thrill rides. Instead, we snuck off and explored Epcot together, tasting foods and looking at flower sculptures, like a couple of eighty year-olds. She’s the only person I know that understands how to travel. With no plan and no goals.
What is something you love about Joey?
Casey: There are too many things! He’s so complex. He is wise and steady. I love how he is always learning new things and evolving. He's amazed by the world. I love that. Also, he makes me laugh all the time. He’s a man of few words to most, but to those closest to him (and they are few) he blossoms, which I feel makes him very unique and lovely. There’s a quote I’ll use from a book that I recently read that describes how I feel about him very well. "She wanted a man whose trunk was thick but whose bark was thin, who flowered beautifully, even if only for her." It’s from We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas.
